What RTO means on Meesho, and what it costs a seller
RTO on Meesho means Return to Origin — an order that came back without being delivered. How it differs from a customer return, and what each one costs you.

RTO stands for Return to Origin. On Meesho it means an order that was shipped and came back to you without ever being delivered.
It is one of the two ways an order comes back, and the two are easy to confuse.
RTO vs customer return
| RTO (courier return) | Customer return | |
|---|---|---|
| Was it delivered? | No | Yes |
| Who sends it back? | The courier | The customer |
| Usual reason | Customer refused it, was not available, cancelled, or the address was wrong | Wrong size, did not like it, damaged, not as shown |
| Condition | Normally unopened | Opened, may be used or damaged |
The difference matters for your money. An unopened RTO parcel can usually go straight back on the shelf. A customer return has to be checked first, and some will not be sellable.
What an RTO costs you
Even when the product comes back in perfect condition, an RTO is not free:
- The packing is gone. The bag, the tape and the label were used once and cannot be used again.
- Any charge that was deducted. Your payment file shows what, if anything, was taken against the order.
- Your stock was away. For a week or more the item was in a courier van instead of being sold to someone else.
- Ads you paid to get the order. That spend does not come back with the parcel.
What a customer return costs you
All of the above, and usually more:
- A return charge is commonly deducted, and it shows against the order in your payment file.
- The product may not be sellable. If it comes back used or damaged, you lose some or all of what it cost you.
That is why a small customer-return rate can cost more than a larger RTO rate.
Why returns change your real profit so much
Say a product earns ₹100 when it is delivered. If 20 in every 100 orders come back, you do not earn 20% less. You earn on 80 orders, and those 80 have to pay for the packing and charges on the other 20. The profit per order placed comes out below ₹80.
This is the sum most sellers skip, and it is why a product can look profitable on every order and still lose money over a month. The Meesho price calculator does it before you list: type your RTO and return rates and it shows the profit per order with returns already counted.
How to see your own RTO and return numbers
Your payment file has a status against every order. The Meesho profit calculator reads it and shows, for each SKU, how many orders were delivered, came back as RTO, or were returned by the customer, and what the returns cost you. A product with a high return rate is often the one quietly eating the profit of the others.
There is more on what is deducted before you are paid in why your Meesho payment is less than the order value.
Ways sellers bring RTO and returns down
No single fix works for everyone, but these are the usual ones:
- Clear photos and honest descriptions. Customers return what does not match the listing.
- A size chart that is actually correct, for anything that is worn.
- Fast dispatch. The longer an order waits, the more likely the customer has changed their mind by the time it arrives.
- Check before you pack. A wrong item or a defect can lead to a return.
- Watch it per SKU. If one product has a much higher return rate than the rest, fix or drop that product.
The short version
- RTO means Return to Origin: shipped, not delivered, came back.
- A customer return was delivered first, then sent back.
- Both cost you packing, time and ads, and a customer return usually costs more.
- Count returns in your profit. Delivered orders alone give a figure that is too high.
The payment-file rates describe orders represented in that file; they may not equal rates for all orders placed in a calendar period. For a pricing forecast, use RTO and customer returns as shares of the same set of all placed orders.
